Interview Basics

This list includes some basic interview advice that is considered common in the industry. However, you'd be surprised how many candidates fail to follow these guidelines in an interview. Don't let it happen to you - set yourself apart from the competition!

Personal Appearance

You are selling yourself in the interview. Studies have shown that first impressions made in the interview are based on appearance.

Always dress professionally for an interview, even if the office protocol is business casual (in Accounting/Finance, a dark blue or black suit is appropriate)

Pay attention to personal hygiene (don't overuse perfume/cologne, makeup, etc.)
Don't smoke or chew gum during the interview.

Etiquette

Plan to arrive 15 minutes early. Allow for traffic, there is no excuse to be late.

Fill out all applications neatly and completely.

Offer a firm handshake and make eye contact.

During the interview: look alert and interested; smile; make eye contact.

Be energetic and positive. Show enthusiasm; believe in yourself.

Never interrupt the interviewer when they are speaking; listen.

Bring several copies of your resume and reference contact information.

Bring a written list of questions for you to ask in the interview.

Answering Questions

Don't answer with a simple yes or no. Explain your answer or back it up with a positive example.

Make sure that you are selling your best experience and accomplishments in answer to the questions.

Be prepared to answer tough questions.

Don't make negative remarks about your current or former companies or managers.
Don't 'over answer' questions or be too long winded.

Don't lie about your experience, skills, past salary, anything.

Never bring up the topic of money during the interview, it is perceived as a negative.

You will appear more interested in money than your career path or the company.

Closing

Impress them by asking good questions.

Always express an interest in the position and ask what are the next steps.

Always thank the interviewer for their time and for their consideration.

Be sure to get the interviewer's business card for correct spelling of their name and their email address.

Always EMAIL a thank you note the same day as the interview. This method is highly preferred over mailing one. For additional formality, you may attach a Word document formatted thank-you letter to the email.
